Arts & Crafts Estate

Location: Haymarket, VA

The Owners of this elegant ten-acre wooded estate wanted a four-bedroom Arts and Crafts Style residence that would take full advantage of the existing landscape. They wanted the house to be semi-formal while comfortable and functional for entertaining. The design was to include a great room, dining room, study, kitchen, sunroom, laundry/mudroom, and three-car garage on the first floor. The second floor was to include three bedrooms, a master bedroom suite, and a bonus room to be located over the garage. Study nooks for each of the daughters’ bedrooms and a two-story foyer with a large curved stairway were also requested. The basement was to incorporate a large recreation room, bar area, wine cellar, media room, and exercise room.

The build faced physical and technical challenges from day one. The site was full of rock and the basement level and rear pool area required special equipment to grade and clear. With a large residence, carriage house, pool house, swimming pool, and outdoor entertainment spaces, lighting and technology was always also a concern. Despite huge advances in technology, delivering a “smart home” with the ability to program the function of every single light was no small task.

From an architectural standpoint, the foyer and staircase proved to be the centerpiece and anchor for the entire home. The arched two-story foyer showcases a beautiful freestanding curved oak staircase with white, turned balusters. Visible inside and out, this dramatic element greets everyone entering the home and speaks to the quality and beauty of the design.
